The release of heavy metals into the environment is a potential threat to water and soil quality as well as to plant, animal and human health. The use of low-cost sorbents for remediation of contaminated soil and waters has gained much interest in recent decades. Within this group zeolites, naturally occurring aluminosilicates, are among the cheapest and are known for their extraordinary sorption of heavy metals. The goal of this PhD thesis was to further gain knowledge about heavy metal uptake by natural and modified zeolites.
